On Mother's Day, KING-TV news aired a story about Shoreline
resident Dawn English -- a woman who adopts and cares for special needs
children. English has cared for dozens
of children for the past 30 years.
Shoreline firefighter Eric Monroe saw the story -- and noticed that
English was pushing a wheelchair down several steps on her front porch. Monroe mobilized two colleagues, Mark
Peterson and Scott Ciraulo, and set to work designing a wheelchair ramp for the
home's front steps. Today that ramp was built, with donated labor from the
Shoreline firefighters and donated materials from North City Lumber. "It's part of a program we call
"From the Heart", says Monroe.
"The Shoreline Firefighters' Association -- made up of employees of
the department -- is a non-profit organization that donates time and money to
worthy causes in our community".
As for Dawn English, she is very grateful. With two of her children wheelchair bound, it's been a struggle
to get them up and down the steps. As
she puts it, "I am getting older, and they are getting heavier." She adds, "now I just have to make
sure no one tries to skateboard on it.!"
