Shoreline Fire Department Expresses Gratitude for Outpouring of Support

The men and women of the Shoreline Fire Department would like to convey their gratitude for the tremendous show of support from the community, since the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania. From the groups of school children who have walked up to fire stations singing "God Bless America" – to the numerous floral displays dropped off at our flagpoles – the message of caring and appreciation has been overwhelming.

"We have had people with tears in their eyes coming up to shake our hands and young children with home-made thank you cards visiting us daily since the tragedies," said Fire Chief J.B. Smith. "We, too, are trying to find ways to express our sympathy for the thousands of people lost. It is extremely comforting to know that so many Shoreline residents want to reach out to us during this terrible time."

Shoreline Fire Department personnel have been part of several region-wide memorial ceremonies and vigils. Four firefighters spent the day at Seattle Center’s Flower Vigil, where Truck 61 and a Seattle truck were used to place the American flag above the International Fountain. Within a few hours, the fire truck was completely covered with flowers, notes, flags, balloons and special notes expressing appreciation for the work of the fire service everywhere.

Shoreline firefighters were also part of a 200-person color guard that opened the University of Washington Husky football game on September 22.

The Shoreline Fire Department and the International Association of Firefighters Local 1760 have placed banners at each fire station, thanking the public for its continuing support and in memory of all of those who died during our nation’s worst-ever tragedy.

The Department continues to assist with those who wish to donate to the IAFF Firefighters Relief Fund, or the Red Cross, by forwarding all donations.

"This has been a time when I am truly proud to serve the people of Shoreline," said Chief Smith. "On behalf of every employee I want to say thank-you and to convey our sincerest appreciation for the thoughtful and heartfelt show of support."
