If you are interested in seeing how amateur radio (ham) operators practice for communications operations during a major disaster or how they communicate with other hams, come to the Shoreline Auxiliary Communications Service (ACS) 2003 Field Day on Saturday, June 28. The event will be open to the public at the Shoreline Fire Training and Support Facility, 17525 Aurora Avenue North, between 12 noon and 4:30 p.m.
Displays will include radio signal transmission equipment, the Shoreline ACS team Communications vehicle, and the interface with the City of Shoreline’s Emergency Operations Center. The Shoreline team will be participating in a contest to see how many amateur operators they can contact in the U.S. and Canada over a 24 hour period, and they will be demonstrating the latest technology available to amateur radio operators.
Field Day, which started in 1933, is sponsored by the National Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL). It serves as a combined contest and nationwide emergency communications exercise.
“The Amateur radio team is a vital part of our emergency response plan in Shoreline,” says Fire Chief Ron Mehlert. “Field Day is an excellent way for citizens to see how well equipped and prepared our radio operators are, and to learn more about this interesting hobby.”
If you are an amateur radio operator and would like to become involved with the Shoreline Auxiliary Communications Service, please contact Ron Burden at
