THE FIRE ALARM BLARED BUT
THEY DIDN'T WAKE UP
We
all know smoke detectors are the first line of
defense in a fire. But a KOMO 4 News
investigation found something that surprised
parents and firefighters; When it comes to your
kids, smoke detectors don't always work.

GARAGE AND CAR DESTROYED BY FIRE IN
SHORELINE
A
two alarm fire in Shoreline today (9/19/05)
destroyed a detached garage and an automobile -
but luckily the blaze was controlled before it
spread to the Innes Arden Home. Shoreline
firefighters were called to the 181St and 14th
Ave NW home at approximately 9 AM when the
homeowner reported his garage on fire. Several
neighbors also called, reporting flames and
smoke visible extending into tall trees near the
home.
A second alarm brought crews from
Northshore, Edmonds, and Seattle Fire
departments to assist. The fire was
under control in about 20 minutes.
The 89 year-old homeowner was not hurt, and
there were no injuries to firefighters during
the incident. Investigators say the fire began
in the man’s car. The man apparently
started his vehicle and went back into the house
for a few minutes. When he returned to the
garage, it was fully involved in flames.
FIRE DESTROYS HOME IN SHORELINE
A
two alarm fire destroyed a Shoreline residence
this morning after a salmon smoker was left on a
porch with wood embers remaining inside. The
home, at 205 Richmond Beach Road, was
totally destroyed.
Shoreline Fire crews were alerted by a man who
spotted flames and smoke coming from a home as
he drove along Richmond Beach Road around 7:30
this morning. Crews controlled the blaze
in about 20 minutes, and then battled hotspots
and smoke for another half hour or so.
They were assisted by engines from Edmonds and
Northshore fire departments.
The tenant had left for work – but returned when
he heard about the fire from news reports.
No
one was injured in the incident, but Shoreline
firefighters did retrieve a kitten that belonged
to the man’s young daughter.
A damage estimate was not available.

SHORELINE FIREFIGHTERS VISIT BLOCK WATCHES
ON NATIONAL NIGHT OUT AGAINST CRIME
Engine companies from three Shoreline
stations took to the streets for
NON-emergency calls – part of their
“response” to
National Night Out
on August 2. Neighborhood street
parties and potluck picnic dinners hosted
the fire crews, along with friends,
relatives, neighbors and local police
officials. “This is our way of saying
“thanks” to the community for supporting us
– even when there is no emergency”, said
Battalion Chief Rick Ashleman. “These
are the folks who are there when we need
them – supporting our efforts and assisting
with spreading the word about community
safety,” Ashleman added.
If your neighborhood is having a block party
and you would like an engine to attend, call
Community Education at 206-533-6500 to
schedule the visit.
